YAMAHA XS400 Cafe racer project
All started as passion for two wheels, but modern bikes were not enought, so I needed something with pure mechanic, what throws flames and does weird clicking noises. Something where you need skills and experience to be able to drive it fast.
So I bring home Yamaha XS400, becuase it was just available.
Supposed to be light restoration, but after stripping of the frame, it became serious passion to do the "TON".
To achieve it, I upgraded engine with performance camshaft, forged pistons, stiffer valve springs, bronze valve guides, copper head gasket, pod filters, open exhaust, electronic ignition with advencer, new gaskets and seals.
Freshly powder coated frame.
First assembly before paintshop.
With all the power come also handling. I upgraded front and rear suspension something more serious.
With all engine modifications, it was time to reduce some weight and improve center of gravity. I decided to use fibre glass for visiual parts (front and rear fender) and carbon fibre for stressed parts such as engine mounts and battery box.
After couple test runs during hot sumer days I realized, that the engine is owerheating. For this case there was no commercial solution available. I had to devleop and calculate oil flow of my own parts to be able to mount sandwich adapter and temeperature sensor.
Final upgrade was obvious from the first test ride. Simply, 1980 single piston refubrished caliper is not able to achieve good performance these days.
I went for 16mm radial master cylinder and 4 pistons caliper combined with 320mm brake rotor. Finally breaking perfermance is satisfactory now.
